Fruits & The Glycemic Index, Free 2 Sided Handout English / Spanish

Updated: Sep 23

This new free PDF features Fruits and their placement on the Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index is a Scientific Model that was developed to scale foods based on how quickly they spike blood sugar after eating. A food with a Glycemic Index of 55 or less is considered low and foods higher than 55 are considered to be high. Foods that have a high Glycemic Index tend to Spike Blood Sugar more quickly after eaten.

You can achieve a lower Postprandial Blood Sugar Spike by eating foods lower on the Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index is one educational tool available to Healthcare Professionals to use during educational sessions with patients who have Prediabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, and CKD.

The Patient Education Sheet that I have created is an excellent resource to use for visual learners. The front-page artwork is meant to be a large infographic of common fruits and their placement on the Glycemic Index, the backside of this educational handout contains an explanation as to why the Fruits were sorted into their particular location.

Individuals can find this educational handout on the Clinical Blog, open the PDF on their Smartphone Device, and take a screenshot of the educational handout for quick reference when selecting fruits to buy at the grocery store!

The Dietetic Wellness Project's ideology is centric to giving people the opportunity to make better health decisions for free. Free Information can have a positive impact on someone's life when they're motivated to make changes to improve their quality of life.

When used in a Guided Education during an Outpatient Appointment, Inpatient Visit, Community Nutrition Presentation, and/or a Telehealth Appointment the Healthcare Professional can use this sheet like a free Lesson Plan by referencing information on the back when counseling a Patient. If you're a Healthcare Professional who plans on using this Patient Education Sheet as a Mini Nutrition Lesson Plan then make sure to:

1) Pre-read the backside of this sheet before the appointment / presentation,

2) Explain the concept of the Glycemic Index slowly

3) Pause occasionally or ask if your Patient / Audience has any questions,

4) Ask the Patient / Audience Open-Ended Questions to keep them engaged in the activity,

5) Ask the Patient / Audience about the types of fruits they eat commonly in their daily life,

6) Inform the Patient / Audience that a food with a glycemic index of 55 or less is considered low but that the lower the glycemic index of a fruit is the healthier that fruit is for someone experiencing frequent High Blood Sugar.

7) Ask the Patient / Audience if there are any Fruits Lower on the Glycemic Index that they would be interested in purchasing on a more regular basis in their Whole-Food form (Purchasing Fresh or Frozen Fruit).
